About this Role.

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Bilingual Medical Assistant to join our remote team. This is a dual front and back office role requiring strong clinical knowledge, excellent communication skills, and the ability to provide outstanding patient support in a virtual environment.

The ideal candidate is fluent in English and Spanish, has hands-on experience with athenahealth (athenaOne) EMR, and has experience working in an orthopedic or U.S.-based clinical setting. The ability to independently manage a high volume of patient interactions while maintaining accuracy, professionalism, and HIPAA compliance is essential.

athenahealth (athenaOne) experience and English/Spanish bilingual fluency are non-negotiable requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Front Office:

  • Answer and manage high-volume inbound patient calls in both English and Spanish.

  • Schedule, confirm, and reschedule patient appointments using athenahealth.

  • Verify insurance eligibility and collect patient demographics and intake information.

  • Route calls appropriately to clinical staff, providers, and departments.

  • Communicate appointment preparation instructions, office procedures, and practice policies to patients.

  • Provide timely and professional follow-up with patients as needed.

Back Office & Clinical Support

  • Triage patient calls and respond to medical questions within the Medical Assistant scope of practice and under provider supervision.

  • Process and submit prescription refill requests through athenahealth on behalf of providers.

  • Coordinate outgoing referral calls to specialists and ancillary facilities.

  • Follow up with patients regarding lab results, imaging, and care plan instructions as directed by the provider.

  • Return patient calls and address medical questions within scope.

  • Document all patient interactions, call notes, and clinical communications accurately in athenahealth.

  • Send and respond to patient messages through the athenahealth patient portal.

  • Assist providers with prior authorization requests and referral coordination.

  • Ensure all clinical documentation is complete, accurate, and HIPAA compliant.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience with athenahealth (athenaOne) EMR — REQUIRED, no exceptions.

  • Fluent English and Spanish — REQUIRED.

  • Minimum 2 years of Medical Assistant experience in a U.S.-based clinical setting.

  • Orthopedic experience strongly preferred.

  • Front and back office experience strongly preferred.

  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA or RMA) preferred, but not required with sufficient relevant experience.

  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, prescription workflows, referrals, and patient communication.

  • Ability to accurately respond to clinical questions within the Medical Assistant scope of practice.

  • Excellent phone etiquette and patient service skills.

  • Strong multitasking, organization, and time-management abilities.

  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.

  • Strong attention to detail and accurate documentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in an orthopedic, specialty, or multi-specialty medical practice.

  • Familiarity with prior authorization processes and insurance verification.

  • Experience using the athenahealth patient portal and messaging features.

  • Knowledge of HIPAA requirements and telehealth/remote-work compliance standards.

  • Experience handling a high volume of inbound and outbound patient calls.

Benefits

Please note that this is a full-time contractor position (40 hours per week) with a negotiable pay rate depending on skillset and experience. The schedule is Monday through Friday, from 9 AM to 5 PM CST.
